FDA Approves New Contraceptive Pill Lybrel

The FDA approves an oral contraceptive that also eliminates menstruation.

Wyeth's oral contraceptive Lybrel is now approved by the FDA to eliminate monthly menstrual periods. The drug has a lower level of synthetic hormones than other oral contraceptives and must be taken 365 days a year. A pap smear revealed she had cervical cancer. “I knew nothing about cervical cancer, I didn’t know what survival rates were, what treatments were, you know to hear that word at age 27 it was very scary,” says Melissa.

Unbelievably, Melissa was pregnant with her second child when she was diagnosed. “All I could think about was how I wanted to have another someday, and just hearing that I might not be able to was really, really upsetting maybe more so than having cancer, believe it or not, but it really was,” says Melissa. New Ovarian Cancer Treatment

There’s new hope for ovarian cancer patients. Doctors are saying that giving chemo through the abdomen rather than through the vein should now be the way many ovarian cancer patients are treated.

This is actually an old method to deliver chemo; it dates back fifty years. It delivers the chemo into what’s called the intra-peritoneal area of the abdomen.

There is a medical breakthrough tonight in the prevention of cervical cancer. A major drug company has announced its experimental cervical cancer vaccine is highly effective.

This cervical cancer vaccine, which is not the only one in development, was shown to be 100 percent effective!

Merck & Co. said on Thursday that the first large study of an experimental cervical cancer vaccine was completely effective in the short term, at blocking the most common forms of cervical cancer.
