Reducing Stress Lowers Risk of Cardiovascular Problems Stories

Reducing Stress Lowers Risk of Cardiovascular Problems

A Review in The Lancet reveals the importance of healthy lifestyle choices to reduce stressors related to cardiovascular risk factors. Researchers from John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore examined records between 1990 to 2006. They observed how stress affects the sympathetic nervous system, impacts physiology, and the effect it has on the cardiovascular system. Lead author, Daniel Brotman, claims "Acute physical stressors such as sugery, trauma, and intense physical exertion are well known triggers of cardiovascular events. Emotional stressors are increasingly recognized as precipitants of such events." (Read more about Reducing Stress Lowers Risk of Cardiovascular Problems)

Research Suggests Ways to Slow Alzheimer's Stories

Research Suggests Ways to Slow Alzheimer's

A new study released at the International Conference on Prevention of Dementia on June 11th suggests that treating other health factors - like diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol can help slow the onset and severity of dementia caused by Alzheimer's disease.

This research further links heart and brain health. Cardiovascular problems like heart attacks or stroke may also increase the onset of dementia. Taking positive actions, like treating high blood pressure, exercising, and changing diet can all help reduce dementia. (Read more about Research Suggests Ways to Slow Alzheimer's)

ASPIRIN AND ELDERLY CONCERNS

There is a warning out tonight by medical researchers that individuals over the age of 70 need to think twice about using aspirin on a daily basis.

It’s important to realize that as benign as certain drugs. Maybe, and even if they’re available over the counter, there are risks and side effects. This study says that those risks become markedly significant in those over 70…so much so that maybe, it’s not worth it to use it. (Read more about ASPIRIN AND ELDERLY CONCERNS)

Clot Busters

Once your heart attack is diagnosed, your treatment begins immediately -- possibly right in the ambulance or emergency department. The knowledge gained in the past years regarding acute coronary syndromes and what happens in the artery during a heart attack has helped guide medical treatment. The goals of medication therapy are to break up or prevent blood clots, prevent platelets from gathering and sticking to the plaque, stabilize the plaque, and prevent further ischemia. HEART ATTACK TRANSFER

There is a warning tonight for those at risk of a heart attack. New research says you should make sure you or someone you love is taken to a hospital that can perform the procedure called angioplasty.
The fact is, many patients who live in outlying areas are not transported directly to a hospital that can perform this important procedure which opens up blocked arteries. And if then the person is transferred to a hospital that does do it, in many cases, it’s simply too late. (Read more about HEART ATTACK TRANSFER)

HEART MYOBLAST CELL INJECTION

A new heart attack treatment uses myoblast cells from different parts of the body to regenerate damaged heart muscle. Doctors have shown how they can regenerate parts of a heart that have been destroyed by a heart attack. The cells for this heart attack treatment come from the patient’s own thigh muscles.
This new heart attack treatment has the potential to be a huge advance in cardiology.
It used to be that once a piece of heart died after a heart attack, it couldn’t be brought back. (Read more about HEART MYOBLAST CELL INJECTION)

LOW LOW CHOLESTEROL

How low should cholesterol go? And is it safe to reduce cholesterol levels to as low as doctors can take it?
New research just released provides the answer.
The guidelines for cholesterol goals have shifted over the years, gradually decreasing. An LDL, or bad cholesterol number of 130 was the cholesterol goal a decade or so ago. That then fell to 100. And now it’s fallen even further to about 70? Is it worth the effort? (Read more about LOW LOW CHOLESTEROL)
